Philosophy of Education

Education is essential in our world because it keeps everything going and propels the human population forward toward the new and upcoming generations. Each generation adds more and more layers of unique and fantastic new ideas that help the world flourish. My reasoning for wanting to take the career path of teaching is to teach children the importance of art and let their creativity soar. Children need to know they are capable of so much and are very special and unique. Many children are discouraged from their dreams, and it’s disheartening. Also, pertaining to art, the world begins to criticize their artwork and tells them that they cannot do it.

As an upcoming teacher, it is essential to know the stages of learning development, including general education and art development. Development varies in all areas from student to student. In addition to this, it is essential to do assessments on what the students know and tailor their lessons based on their students' previous knowledge. The inTASC Model Core Teaching Standards, also state learning differences as a standard. The definition of learning differences in education inaction is “the teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.” Each child should have a fair, equal chance at academic success. If a child needs more help understanding a concept, I will give my one hundred percent to ensure they get the help and materials they need. Being an art teacher will still bring concepts that some kids may not understand, and I will explain them more in-depth to them one-on-one or in a small group of three.

In my art classroom, we will explore the different cultures to be inclusive of the students and their backgrounds from where they are from. It will also be a unique opportunity for me to research the artworks from different cultures before making a lesson for my class. I believe that sometimes quizzes help the students and are good ways to assess what the student has retained. It would be beneficial for the child to have at least two chances on the quiz so that if they did make a bad grade, it would not affect their grade, and they would have a second opportunity to try again. The quizzes would be on art history because if students do not retain the art concepts most of the time, they retain the art history, which creates people who appreciate art and may grow up to be patrons of the arts. My classroom environment will be welcoming and warm - no one will have to be nervous to come to my class or anxious about their overall grade if they dedicate their effort to their work. As an educator, everyone should be treated respectfully, especially in my classroom. I would model my classroom after the art classrooms I have observed. Most of my knowledge of how I would like my classroom to be comes from my high school teacher’s art classroom and my last observational classroom.

In conclusion, my classroom will be inviting, worry-free, and full of self-expression. I want children to learn more about the art world and show them how to appreciate art even if they do not like it. They will also know that they can achieve their dreams.
